Emmaus Ambulance

Dedication, Courage and Commitment

The Emmaus Borough Ambulance Department is an advanced life support EMS provider who responds 24/7 to the Borough of Emmaus municipal boundaries as well as portions of Lower Macungie Township to the west, Salisbury Township to the north, and half of Upper Milford Township to the south and east.  In addition, the Emmaus Ambulance Department provides mutual aide to various municipalities throughout Lehigh County, Berks, Bucks and Montgomery County as needed.  The Emmaus Ambulance is dispatched through the Lehigh County 9-1-1 center located in the City of Allentown.

The Emmaus Ambulance Department primarily transports patients to the two major health-care networks in the region, Lehigh Valley and St. Luke’s University.  These health networks have multiple campus located throughout the greater Lehigh Valley area and offer patients a myriad of services including emergency care, trauma centers, comprehensive stroke, and pediatric facilities.

The response area is diverse ranging from urban to rural areas found in the townships and reflects communities of all socioeconomic classes, varying ages and demographics. The community has many different hazards including a major railway which effectively divides the area in half. There are also large educational establishments, manufacturing businesses and multiple elderly care facilities.

In the year 2020, the Emmaus Ambulance Department answered 2,020 calls for service. This reflects an average of 5.5 calls per 24-hour period or 168 per month.  However, compared to previous years the obvious effects of Covid-19 were significant and in 2020 there was a 19% reduction in calls for service from the previous year (2508.)

Currently the Department has 5 full-time Paramedics/PHRNs, two of whom serve as operational supervisors specializing in training and procurement.  The department also maintains about a dozen part-time EMTs, half a dozen part-time Paramedics/PHRNs, and a couple of paratransit van operators.

In 2020, Emmaus Ambulances traveled 21,637.7 miles between the three ambulances. The department’s wheelchair van was also active and traveled over 7,000 miles. The fleet is presently comprised of two van front type 3 ambulances and one heavy duty type 1 ambulance in addition to the paratransit van.

In addition to providing emergency and routine medical transportation/paratransit, the Emmaus Ambulance is heavily involved in the community in providing free medical equipment such as commodes, walkers, and wheelchairs. The department also provides periodic hands only CPR classes to the community and the regional high school. Although Covid-19 has limited the opportunities to provide this training to the community while reflecting social distancing, the department is looking forward to providing these classes in the future.

The Emmaus Ambulance Department has been recognized for its commitment to Pediatrics through the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s “Prepared for Pediatrics” program.  The department is recognized at the Silver Plus level by the American Heart Association’s Mission Lifeline Program. This program recognizes service level and care provided by an agency in stroke, cardiac arrest, and heart attacks. In 2020, the department became part of a pilot program through the Pennsylvania Department of Health for prehospital antibiotic administration in open fractures and is currently involved in the program with success and benefit to our customers.
